Shabby Chic Heaven

Uruguay is hardly a place where you’d expect to find much modern design – mid-century or otherwise – but a visit to the glamorous Punta del Este riviera, 85 miles east of Montevideo, changes all that.

Antique markets in Uruguay offer a unique cultural experience that connects visitors with the country’s past. Known for its mix of urban sophistication and rural traditions, Uruguay has a deep appreciation for antiques, and these markets reflect that sentiment. In and around Punta del Este—a prime destination for tourists seeking luxury and charm—the antique markets attract a mix of locals, tourists, and collectors in search of rare finds, vintage furniture, artisanal crafts, and historic memorabilia.

One of the most popular destinations is Feria de Antigüedades y Artesanías in Punta del Este, a vibrant open-air market that comes alive during the summer months. Vendors gather here to showcase a wide array of items, from ornate silverware and porcelain to rustic farm tools, mid-century furniture, and original artworks. Many pieces are remnants of Uruguay’s colonial and European influences, which give the markets a uniquely eclectic feel.

We travelled along the coast to La Barra; a sleepy holiday town and an unexpected treasure trove. La Barra is known for its artistic flair and bohemian ambiance and the place is packed with decorative antiques shops offering everything you need in order to inject a little style into your home.  You’ll find an amazing array of mid-century modern design, glass, sensational ceramics, fabulous furniture a-go-go and floor-to-ceiling jumbles of shabby chic objects.

In addition to traditional antiques, many vendors in these markets offer a blend of old and new, mixing antiques with modern Uruguayan design elements that highlight the country’s artisanal craftsmanship. This juxtaposition reflects a contemporary, dynamic take on antique collecting, where modern sensibilities meet timeless elegance. The markets around Punta del Este and La Barra are, therefore, not just shopping destinations but cultural experiences, encapsulating Uruguay’s history, artistic heritage, and evolving style.
