Description
Executed in 1998, Portret (Portrait) belongs to a formative moment in Nyoman Masriadi’s career, painted shortly after the artist returned to Bali following his departure from ISI Yogyakarta. Created during Indonesia’s Reformasi period, the work dates from a brief and significant phase in which Masriadi’s practice remained materially and conceptually experimental, and predates the distinctive visual language that would later establish him as one of the leading figures of contemporary Indonesian art.
Unlike the muscular, psychologically charged figures that characterise his mature oeuvre, Portret reveals an artist working through questions of identity, process and representation. While recognisable aspects of his later style are already present, the painting stands apart from his subsequent output, offering a rare insight into the development of his artistic vocabulary.
Works from this transitional period are scarce and occupy an important position within Masriadi’s oeuvre, illuminating the conditions from which his later practice emerged. As international recognition of both the artist and contemporary Indonesian art has continued to grow, early works of this nature have assumed increasing historical and scholarly significance.
